The fleur-de-lis is a heraldic charge depicting a lily and has been used in a variety of contexts throughout history, including heraldry, organizational emblems, arts and architecture, and Christian religous art.
In the Christian context, the fleur-de-lis as derived from the Madonnn's lily represents virginity and purity and the Virgin Mary more specifically. The trefoil, three-lobed shaped can also represent the Holy Trinity.
